Tips for Jaggery Storage

Tips for Jaggery Storage

  1. Choose the right container: Use an airtight container made of glass, brass or steel to store jaggery. Make sure the container is clean and dry before placing the jaggery inside.

  2. Break it into smaller pieces: If your jaggery is in a large block, break it into smaller pieces. This will help maintain its freshness and prevent moisture from accumulating inside the container.

  3. Organic Cloth: Wrap the jaggery in a clean, breathable cloth made of natural fibers like cotton or muslin. This cloth acts as a moisture absorber and protects the jaggery from external contaminants. Tie the cloth securely to prevent air exposure.

  4. Neem or Mango Leaves: Place a few neem or mango leaves inside the jaggery container. These leaves have antimicrobial properties and can help prevent the growth of bacteria or fungi. Ensure the leaves are clean and dry before adding them.

  5. Monsoon season precaution: During the monsoon season, you can maintain the moisture content of jaggery by unwrapping it, placing it on a clean cloth, exposing it to daylight in a shaded area and storing it in an airtight container overnight to prevent excessive moisture absorption or mold growth. Repeat this process weekly until the monsoon season ends.

  6. Regular inspections: Periodically check the jaggery for any signs of moisture, mold, or spoilage. If you notice any changes in texture, appearance, or smell, discard the affected portion and replace it with fresh jaggery.
